Course objectives
Main objectives of the course are: - to describe key moments in the history of Buddhism from Buddha´s death until modern times;
- to define basic philosophical issues of the teachings of particular Buddhist schools;
- to practice basic terminology in Sanskrit and Pali;
- to recognize the most important sources to the study of particular Buddhist schools;
- to differentiate forms and (self)presentations of Buddhism in modern society

  • 0. Introductory lecture, sylabus, literature and requirements for the fulfillement of the course 1. India at the time of Buddha, Buddha's life 2. Buddha's life 3. Dhammacakkapavattanasutta 4. Pali canon and Buddhist councils 5. Early sangha and the spread of Buddhism, Buddhist art 6. Beginnings of Mahayana, development of the concept of Mahayana in Western academic discourse, arhat vs. bodhisattva, the concept of a bodhisattva, Paramita, Bodhisattvacharya 7. Development of Buddhist philosophy, Mahayana schools - Madhyamika, Yogacara, Prajnaparamita, Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, Nirvana=Samsara, concepts of Upaya and Prajna 8. Arrival of Buddhism to China, Buddhism and other religions in China and Central Asia 9. Vajrayana, Tantra, categories of Tantras, Kalachakratantra and its intepretations in the West 10. Buddhism in Tibet - history, schools and concepts 10. Buddhism in China - schools of Chinese Buddhism, Tribune Sutra and Cchan 11. Teaching methods
Lectures, training of terminology, class discussion, commented readings from sources.
Assessment methods
Colloquim
Colloquim is recommended to students of other disciplines except of Religion studies. Requirements for colloqium are:
(a) written test I. concerning the topics discussed in lectures 1-5
(b) written test II. concerning the topics discussed in lectures 6-12
60% of correct answers is needed to pass.
Exam
Exam is compulsory for all students of Religion studies. Prerequisites for the exam are two written tests and two short written commentaries to a selected text. Commnetaries have to be delivered in time, 60% of point is needed. The exam is oral and is focused on:
(a) examining students knowledge according to given list of themes;
(b) examining students interpretation abilities within these themes.
In case of failure in test, test(s) become written part of the exam and it is necessary to write them on the same date before the oral exam.
