Course objectives

The course aims at analytical work with literature from the thematic scope of the project “Religious Rationalities as a Factor of Cultural Change in European History” (https://is.muni.cz/auth/www/52251/racionality/rac.doc), which focuses on historical sociology and historical anthropology. Students submit a detailed analytical synopsis of a book, present the outcomes to other students in the course, put the outcomes into context, suggest their links to the current version of the project and to other literature, and actively participate in discussions.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will be able to:

submit an analytical synopsis of a book from the field of historical anthropology, historical sociology, study of religions or a related discipline, addressing theoretical questions on the basis of specific material;

evaluate the contribution of the book, its limits, and its relationship to some other texts, theoretical approaches and schools of thought;

express directions in research opened by the book;

suggest a precise place of the acquired knowledge in a specific research project;

present the outcomes in the form of conference paper.

Teaching methods

Reading and work on the synopsis of a book, oral presentations, class discussions.

Assessment methods

Evaluated synopsis of a book (70 %), evaluated presentation(20 %), evaluated participation in discussions (10 %).
