Cíle předmětu
The course follows the development of the theory of the just ruler in Islam through text analysis, historical discussions and in different time zones and regions. Short movies and current media reports will add a lively dimension to our discussions. The course is aimed to familiarize you with the main historical outline of the Islamic Middle East but also about forging links between and establishing an understanding and an appreciation of the relevancy of Islam as religion and history to contemporary politics and events worldwide.
Osnova
  • Our main theme which runs like a thread through this seminar is the question of political legitimacy in Islam and its ample manifestations and influence on the region. Thus, after an introductory part of the world before the rise of Islam we would explore Muhammad and the formation of a new religion and civilization. We will follow the emergence of the Caliphate and its disintegration and the rise of alternative political systems (Sultanate, Shia caliphate, Ottoman Empire). Following we will explore emergence of the modern Middle East and Muslim nation states and the current breakdown of the nation state and rise of new Islamic political manifestations; Muslim Brothers, al-Qaida, Isis. The current events and contestations in the Islamic civilization will be thus explored against the theory of the just ruler and the different visions of Islamic political machination.

Metody hodnocení
Requirements: attendance; reading and active participation in class; Paper (5-10 pages) on a topic to be decided with the teacher. Grading System 25% class participation and attendance 75% final paper.
