Course objectives
The course outlines the development of the basic terminology in stylistics (stylistics as the study of text, the development of the conception of “style”, various definitions of “style” and “text”, styles and their typology in connection with different levels of generalization). The concept of “functional style”, the development and the present state of the conception of the functional styles. The analyses of the functional style features. The stylistic terminology, classification of functional styles, stylistic lexical devices, the stylistic classification of vocabulary, the stylistic use of synonymy, homonymy and polysemy. The basic characteristics and linguistic devices of the style of fiction. The reflection of morphological factors in a text, the simplex and complex styles. The differing styles of speech and writing, the transposition between them, the stylization of a speech in a written text. The selected features of a text construction (cohesion, coherence, intertextuality, etc.). In this connection, analogy as well as differences between Czech and Russian are also considered.
Learning outcomes
The student should know:
- the definition of stylistics as a science discipline, the conception of style, various interpretation of style understanding;
- the classification of functional styles, determination of its communication aims, stylistic devices, as well as their function in Russian language;
- the classification of expressing language devices and stylistic devices at phonetical, lexical and syntax language levels; - oral genres of the functional styles as determinants of formal and content aspects of a text.

After finishing the course, the student will be able;
- to identify and to compare neutral and stylistically marked vocabulary in the Russian language;
- to find expressive means and stylistic devices of language in a text, to determine their function and ways of expressing in the Russian language.

The student will have the skills of:
- determination and assigning of the text to the certain functional style;
- identification of authors individual style elements in artistic text;
- practical skill of writing and stylistic correction of a text.
Syllabus
  • 1. The basic terminology in stylistics. The place and limits of stylistics and its subject of study towards other linguistical subdisciplines. The concept of functional style, the development and the present state of the conception of functional styles.
  • 2.–3. The colloquial style. Basic characteristic features of colloquial style.
  • 3.–4. The style of the professional literature. The determination of the functional style of the professional literature, the inner differentiation of style, the vocabulary and structure of professional literature style.
  • 5.–6. The administrative style. The characteristic features of the administrative style. The typical genres and examples of this kind of style. Its norms and means.
  • 7. The news style = journalistic style. The written journalistic text versus the spoken one. The genres, examples and means of this type of style.
  • 8. “Cerkovno-religioznyj stil’” style. Its characteristic features in comparison to other functional styles.
  • 9.–10. The style of fiction. Its characteristic features and linguistic devices. The genres and examples of the style. Figurative meaning—metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, symbol, allegory, personification, hyperbole, irony, etc.
  • 11. The stylistic classification of vocabulary. The literary and colloquial expressions—slang, jargon, argot. Time scope. Lexeme as a part of a linguistic norm. Neologisms, archaisms and historicisms.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practical demonstration of separate functional “styles”, short tests during the semester.
Assessment methods
The final written text in Russian language. The test consists of 35 questions that are evaluated with 70 points. The requirement for passing the credit is active seminar participation that is evaluated with short tests during the semester and successfully written test—60% from the whole point evaluation.
