Course objectives
The aim of the practical seminar “Czech-Russian Interference in Translation” is to teach beginning translators to recognize syntactic, lexical, word-forming, valency, morphologic, stylistic, orthographic, formally graphic and other differences between the Czech and the Russian languages to the smallest detail because some differences are minimal and under the influence of the two languages similarity can be omitted and unrecognized at a first sight. Nevertheless, even minimal interference (or influence) of the source language makes the translation unnatural, less readable, incoherent, incohesive, sometimes even incomprehensible or inadequate. The students should be able not only to avoid mistakes but to find them in somebody else’s translation, comment and correct it. The seminar is focused on the improvement of translation skills of creating the text while translating from Russian into Czech in all types and genres of texts (artistic translation, journalistic translation, technical translation, administrative and administrative juridical translation).
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to produce appropriately translated texts written in cultivated Czech language;
- to avoid influences of the source language, primarily in syntactic, lexical, word-forming, valency, morphologic, stylistic, orthographic, formally graphic spheres;
- to evaluate the function of lexical units without equivalent (realia, proper names, addressing, phrasemes and idioms …) while translating and to appropriately react on them;
- to recognize wrong translation, comment mistakes, to give reasons and correct.
