Course objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will have a general knowledge of Czech music. Students will be able to discuss problems of style, structure (form) and performance of Czech music.
Syllabus
  • Political, social and cultural circumstances in the first half of 17th century. A. V. Michna z Otradovic. Cancionals, V. Holan-Rovenský
  • Principes of composition of baroque music, relation homophony-polyphony. The Czech conterpoint: B. M. Černohorský. J. Zach. J. N. Seger and his followers
  • Sacred music with respect to orders: Jesuits. The forms of compositions - religious song, oratorio, mass. Š. Brixi, F.X. Brixi. F. I. Tůma. J. A. Plánický
  • The Czech cantors, folk music. Pastorelas.
  • Musical life in Prague, canonisation of Jan Nepomucký, musica navalis. Chateau chapels in Bohemia and Moravia I.
  • Chateau chapels in Bohemia and Moravia II. Baroque opera in Czech lands and in Wienna. The baroque theatre in Český Krumlov
  • The coronation of Carl VI. in 1723. Fux-Zelenka-Caldara
