Course objectives
This course offers an outline of the Spanish Literature from its beginings in the Middle Ages to the half of the 19th century. The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the background of the development and of the diversification of every literary movement within given periods. It will be the students’ task to apply the beforehand defined terms during the analysis and imply their proper conclusions from observed phenomena.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to define basic notions of the literary context and connect literary questions with the non-literary considerations. Students should be able to classify a given author according to this context and duly comment on his/her importance for the literary scene. Students will be able to imply and explain the functioning of basic literary phenomena and they will be able to analyze and comment a particular text.
Syllabus
  • Attendance is compulsory, two absences per semester are accepted.Each lesson is divided into two parts: the 1st one offers a brief survey of the treated theme, while the 2nd one is dedicated to literary analysis of the most important works. PROGRAM: 1. Introduction./ 2. Middle Ages. Historical context. Origins of the Literature written in Spanish./ 3. Middle Ages. Medieval epic poetry. El mester de clerecía./ 4. Transitional Period: from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Historical context. Poetry, prose and theater./ 5. Renaissance (16th century). Historical context. The Golden Age. Poetry. / 6. La Celestina. Narrative: picaresque novels -Lazarillo de Tormes-./ 7. Baroque (17th century). Historical context. Poetry: Conceptism and Culteranism -Quevedo and Góngora-. Mysticism -Santa Teresa de Jesús, Fray Luis de Granada, San Juan de la Cruz-./ 8. Narrativa: Miguel de Cervantes -Don Quixote, novelles, etc-. Other picaresque novels./ 9. Golden Age Theatre. The Spanish comedy, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderón de la Barca, etc.-./ 10. Illustration (18th century). Historical context. Neoclassicism. / 11. Romantism (19th century). Teaching methods
Lecture: description of the literary field, explanation and definition of basic notions and their demonstration on concrete texts by concrete authors. Seminar: Application of the acquired theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. In the form of comments the students show their capability to connect their theoretical knowledge while working with a particular text.
Assessment methods
Credit is obtained for: a) elaborating all comments on literary texts where students prove their capability to make use of theoretical knowledge with the analysis and interpretation of literary texts and b)final exam: written test (success rate: 70 %).
