Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge in the field of general linguistics, which students gained during previous studies. The course is focused on the basic characteristics of language, a comprehensive description of the language system and the function of language as a tool for communication, knowledge, and interpretation of the world. In addition to the structuralist and functional approach to language, the subject of interest is also the transformational-generative approach and the and cognitive approach, etc. Attention is also paid to the classification of languages and concepts from modern linguistics (communication act, text, discourse, speech genres; linguistic picture of the worl). The aim of the course is also to help doctoral students in formulating the theoretical basis of doctoral work and placing their own research in a general linguistic context.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- be familiar with the issues of general linguistics and linguistic terminology;
- characterize linguistic paradigms;
- characterize approaches to language research;
- classify the languages ​​of the world and state the characteristics of language families;
- apply the acquired knowledge in the field of own research.
