Prerequisites

The ability to understand texts in English, to participate in discussion, openess, interest in history, theory and exhibition strategies of internet art in both virtual and physical space of its presentation. The ability to search the Internet in Czech and English.

Course objectives

The course is focused on providing the basic overview of the history and theory of Internet art and ways of its exhibiting in given time periods.
As part of theoretical training, there will be discussed various approaches to exhibiting Internet art depending on its form, degree of institutionalization and curator personalities.
The student will be informed about various types of internet art and the specifics of their presentation. We will pay attention to key historical examples. Emphasis will be placed on the practical use of acquired knowledge.
The teaching process consist of lecture supplemented by discussions, practical exercises, reading of recommended literature and individual elaboration of final essay.
The course is designed as a necessary information background for future curators working with internet art, exhibition organizers and for all those interested in Internet art. The course graduate is capable of critical assessment of internet art exhibition or exhibition containing internet art, and to engage in the organization process of exhibitions.
The course is freely followed by a practical two-semester seminar TIM_M_029 (spring term) and TIM_M_030 (autumn term), which is focused on practical aspects of Internet exhibition implementation: from curatorial preparation of the exhibition project, its funding, promotion, realization and accompanying program to post-production.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will be able to:
- understand the art related to the Internet in the context of the contemporary art practice
- demonstrate knowledge of major exhibitions, curatorial personalities and approaches to the presentation/exhibition of Internet art
- understand terms describing the art practice related to the Internet and to understand the plurality of forms in can take
- show sensitivity towards the art work and its adjustment for the given exhibition space (understanding terms such as site-specific, site-sensitive, archival approach etc.)
- orient themselves in the issues of exhibiting Internet related art

• historical insight into exhibition practice concerning Internet art and into ways of its presentation outside of the gallery system; Net.Pioneers, Web 1.0, Web 2.0, Post-Internet, Expanded Internet Art; Net Art vs the contemporary art
• the position of digital/internet art in (on-line)galleries today: including, excluding, summing up and framing various approaches, discussion: literal approach, archival approach, curate yourself, artist as curator // various types of curators, DIY, franchises, natural inclusion into exhibitions of contemporary art; independent vs. commercial models

To fulfill course requirements, it is necessary to:
- fill in the entrance questionnaire at the beginning of term
- presentation
- short final test
- elaboration of final work on a topic of your choice from the range of recommended topics (thematic areas: review of ongoing exhibition, translation of a text on exhibiting internet art into Czech, creation of your exhibition concept, portrait of known curator or exhibition space, reflection essay or criticism on historically significant exhibition)
