Prerequisites
A student is capable of critical reading of texts in Czech and English (the course language is Czech). The course is primarily intended for students of the Theory of Interactive Media who are studying in the Master's degree program. But students from other fields are also welcome. Course capacity is limited.

Course objectives
Cultural Studies are an interdisciplinary exploration of the relationships of culture and society, often crossing the boundaries of disciplines and not despising the so-called low art and the so-called mass culture that is the significant symbol and products of society, power and ideologies. Cultural Studies are interested in analysing of cultural products and phenomena (from fashion to media and subcultural slang), artistic representation as well as their signs and meanings that ideologically affect consumers. Digital (new media/interactive) art is the cultural phenomenon and an integral part of the system of cultural production and consumption. It is a sign of contemporary society. The aim of the course significantly expands the theoretical and methodological apparatus of the Theory of Interactive Media, which will enable critical examination of digital (new media/interactive) art as part of human culture, cultural production and consumption. Students will be familiar with the field of Cultural Studies, will understand the fundamental theses and be able to apply selected analytical methods to their research subject.
Learning outcomes
A student will be able to:
  • - name and explain the basic approaches of Cultural Studies;
  • - define the position of digital (interactive / neo-media) art in the system of study of culture, cultural production and consumption;
  • - use selected theoretical and methodological approaches of Cultural Studies to analyse and interpret the field of study of the Theory of Interactive Media;
  • - prepare a research methodology;
  • - propose and explain a suitable method of researching the cultural phenomenon;
  • - select useful research methods;
  • - present and defend a research project.

    Teaching methods
    The course is based on group discussions and individual effort (readings, small tasks, and the final project). Students are first acquainted with the discussed topic, but then the main focus is on the development of analytical skills and the ability to prepare robust research methodology.
    Assessment methods
    The course is completed with a test and a final project.
  • The short test, which combines open questions and questions with a choice of several options, verifies the student's knowledge and understanding of the discussed theory of cultural studies.
  • The project reflects the student's ability to apply acquired knowledge to a pre-selected topic critically. The form of the project is on an agreement with the teacher (the output may be an audiovisual record, ethnographic studies, essays, etc., according to the topic, interests and abilities of each student).
  • The composition of the final grade:
  • 10% active participation in the course, 20% test, 55% project and 15% project presentation.
