Course objectives

Main objectives of the course are:
- clarification of the specifics of Medieval and Early Modern literature;
- understanding of principles of Medieval poetics;
- clarification of the concepts of important literary-historical syntheses and relevant literature in the field;
- clarification of the development of the literature of the Middle Ages and Humanism

Learning outcomes

After the completion of the course the students:
- shall become familiar with issues concerning the study of Early Czech literature;
- understand basic terms and methods of research;
- are able to work with main sources of information;
- are familiar with issues concerning the development, functions, and genres of Early Czech literature;
- are familiar with principles of interpretation of Early Czech texts, also from the perspective of literary and general cultural contexts.

Syllabus

• - Introduction to the basic literature of the course, comparison of literary-historical syntheses;
• - specifics of the artistic representation in Medieval and Early Modern literature;
• - The Bible and Early literature, working with the Bible, handbooks;
• - issues of the Medieval art of legends;
• - Medieval chronicles, the story by the so-called Dalimil and his chronicle;
• - Medieval Latin poetry;
• - "controversial" questions of the Medieval love lyric poetry;
• - specifics of the literature of the Hussite epoch;
• - Jeroným Pražský, Petr of Chelčice;
• - genre system of the literature of the Renaissance Humanism;
• - genre system of the humanistic period in Czech literature;
• - important literary figures of the national Renaissance Humanism;
• - important literary figures of the Latin Renaissance Humanism.

Teaching methods

The lectures are using mainly the methods of presentation, analysis, and application of theoretical knowledge during an instructive interpretation of selected texts.

Assessment methods

The credit is granted by the lecturers on the basis of a written test on the presented topics. The written examination consists of 10 questions focusing on the basic notions of the discipline.
