Course objectives
The aim is to introduce students to the problems of translation, familiarize them with basic terms and professional terminology. The seminar focuses on selected problems of translation of literature, especially on equivalence and adequacy in translation, stylistic adequacy, intertextual lexicon. Particular attention is paid to interlingual homonymy of related languages.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing of the course the student will be able to understand translatology as a science, to use information from the most important works on translation, to understand and explain the knowledge of the fundamental works of Jiří Levý, to use information from the theory of literature, comparative literature and linguistics, to analyze individual types of translations, to understand basic principles of criticism of translation, to apply the theoretical knowledge in a separate translation of a shorter prose text, to translate a part of one of the chosen genres (story, novel, novel).
Syllabus
  • Art translation as a historical discipline. History of Czech and Ukrainian art translation. Principles of work with dictionaries, a glossary. Analysis of poetics in art translation. Selection of a literary work for translation and its interpretation. Functional equivalence of the translation. Critical analysis of translated texts.
