Course objectives
The aim of the course is a basic introduction to the specifics, environment, history, aesthetic principles and system of garden and landscape design. Students should during the course understand that the profession is based on the horticultural trades, has the technical principles of his work, it is an independent scientific discipline due to their specific work with plants, terrain, stone and water, but mainly with time and is also the art and the art of synthetic because it brings together multiple disciplines.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic characteristics of garden and landscape design (architecture), the commonalities and differences compared with architecture, application landscape features and greenery in urban planning, architecture called. So called savannah effect, natural landscapes, the beginnings of human impact on the landscape.
  • 2. Regular garden styles (formal geometric) and irregular (natural landscape), ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, India, China, Mexico and Peru - characteristics of settlements, landscapes and gardens.
  • 3. Western civilization - Egypt, Crete, Greece, Rome.
  • 4. The European Middle Ages - Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism and natural landscaped style.
  • 5. Period of industrial development and the garden cities movement, urban public parks of the 19th century and their current form – example Lužánky park in Brno.
  • 6. Aesthetic patterns of garden and landscape composition - the main principles (logic, adequacy, decisiveness, effectiveness), geometric and natural composition, proportionality, scale, illusion, landmark, gradation, contrast, rhythm, harmony, scenery variability (color, light and shadow, animals, vistas, views, visual definition, greenery and architecture.
  • 7. Importance of greenery in settlements, system of greenery, share of greenery in settlements, private residential and recreational facilities greenery (gardens for family houses, cottages and lodges, alotment gardens ), reserved green (educational and health facilities, botanical, zoological gardens, greenery of industrial and agricultural companies, offices and important buildings.
  • 8. Public greenery (green residential complexes, squares, streets, parks, city parks and small parks, greenery on structures, conservatories), Principles of botanical gardens and arboretums - an example of a botanical garden and arboretum Mendel, Greenery for special purpose (cemeteries), Reconstruction of regular and irregular parks and gardens, assumptions for the reconstruction.
  • 9. Countryside greenery (principles, village squares, streets, parks, small parks, cemeteries, private gardens, greenery near the religious buildings and monuments, plant material), Economical greenery, management of municipal greenery, green passport, green Master Plan.
  • 10. Greenery in the agricultural landscape (the erosion control measures, hedgerows, windbreaks), greenery along the roads, greenery along watercourses (shore, offshore, accompanying) greenery near the buildings in the landscape, solitary trees, landscape historical structures and landscape detail.
  • Excursion 1. Urban interdependence of historic buildings and green spaces, compositional principles, combined with modern architecture (The Brno Ringstrasse, Denis Gardens, Špilberk park, Sady Osvobození) 2. Biological and aesthetic principles of garden and landscape design (Botanical Garden and Arboretum of Mendel University, Lužánky)

Free essay on one of the given topics, supplemented by at least one custom drawing, another photo, material artifacts in the Annex possible.
