Course objectives
The course will follow Goethe's Faust and highlight the historical journey that led to this supreme interpretation of the myth.
Syllabus
  • 1. Historical and mythical face of Doctor Faustus
  • 2. Particularities of the German renaissance
  • 3. Goethe's Fausta I. and II.
  • 4. Goethe's timely and radical uncovering of the menace of modernization
  • 5. Catholic and Protestant version of the faustian myth. Why Goethe's Faust's ending is catholic (even Marian!)
  • 6. Mephisto in the Soviet Russia (Bulgakov, Master i Margarita)
  • 7. "Doctor Faustus" of Thomas Mann and the German ride to hell.
