Syllabus
  • Doc. Kudrnáč: The seminar is outlined as a complementation of a lecture on 20th century Czech literature. The sessions are devoted to authors and problems of Czech literature in a comparative perspective, in relation to Czech literature of different periods as well as in relation to other literatures. The starting point of the work in the seminar is usually a topic dealt with in a seminar paper. The texts from both primary and secondary literature are chosen so as to complement the list of reading required for the exam. After an introduction to the reference literature of the field, the sessions will be devoted to literary groups of the Czech fin de siecle; the ante-war generation or the "generation of rebels"; the role of the "1914 Almanac"; poetism in its relations to other literary schools; psychological prose of the nineteen thirties and before; drama from the end of the nineteenth century to the nineteen forties; the birth of the Czech literary criticism at the turn of the twentieth century and its further development; the innovative and traditional tendencies in historical prose; important expressionistic authors; the poetic schools of the nineteen thirties and forties.
  • Dr. Nováková: The seminars will be aimed at analyses of particular literary works of this period in Czech literature. We will focus on the key works as well as on the works written by authors who are wrongfully neglected. We will think over the particular texts to consider also the literary, cultural and social contexts.
