Thorough knowledge of Latin (in extend of the B. A. State Exam in Latin Language and Literature, but the exam itself is not required).

Course objectives
Medieval Latin is a historic, cultural and linguistic phenomenon that is a direct successor of Latin language and literature of Classical Antiquity. Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows: to exemplify this continuity and its means; to present the main characteristics of Medieval Latin and literature as upholders of spiritual culture in both the European and Czech Middle Ages; to present Medieval Latin as the language of historical sources and diplomatic documents; to outline all information about the sources and scholarly literature for further study of this topic.

  • 1. Definition and chronology of Medieval Latin studies.
  • 2. History of Medieval Latin studies.
  • 3. Constitutive elements of Medieval Latin (Classical, Vulgar and Christian Latin).
  • 4. Dictionaries and other basic tools for the study of Medieval Latin.
  • 5. Status of Latin in the late Roman Empire.
  • 6. Forms and genres of Medieval Latin prose.
  • 7. Forms of Medieval Latin poetry (metrical, rhythmical and rhythm-metrical poetry).
  • SEMINAR: Reading, translation and analysis of selected texts.
