Course objectives
The course goal is to understand the history of modern Vietnam (including the chronology and internal development of this country) in relation with world powers and sourrounding nations of Southeast Asia. Main focus: description of influence of colonial powers and conflicts in 19th and 20th centuries on formation of modern Vietnam. The course History of Vietnam 2 - from colonial era to the present time is a fundamental theoretical profile core course of the study programme Vietnamese Studies. Content of this course and acquired knowledge will be also a part of the Final State Examination. The course is open for students of other study programmes – in such a case only final written examination with requirements of more moderate results is needed to pass the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course a student will be able to:
- describe main phases and name most important personalities in Vietnamese history
- explain the development of Vietnamese history from the point of view of other countries and their influence
- describe mains reasons of wars in Vietnam in 20th century
- explain the post-war development
- describe contemporary Vietnamese foreign relations

  • 2. Contacts with colonial powers and missionaries: Portuguese and Jesuits in Vietnam
  • 3. French invasion and domination
  • 4. Limits of colonial development in French Indochina
  • 5. Vietnamese national revival, modernisation, birth of Vietnamese communism and other political parties. Forms of Vietnamese resistence against the French
  • 6. Worsening of ecomonics before the World War II.
  • 7. Vietnamese democratic republic, division into Northern and Southern Vietnam
  • 8. International influences in Northern and Southern Vietnam
  • 9. American War in Vietnam
  • 10. Reunification of Vietnam
  • 11. Contemporary postwar modernization and development

Assessment methods
Students of the study programme Vietnamese Studies: 1) three written tests during the course - at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass for final written examination; + 2) final written examination: at least 75 % of correct answers is required to pass the course. Students of other study programmes: only final written examination is compulsory: at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass the course.
