Course objectives
The linguistic situation in the Italian peninsula after 476 A.D., the development of the Italian language from its birth in the 9th-10th centuries to the early 16th century; analysis of original texts.
Syllabus
  • From vulgar Latin to Italian; main periods of the development of Italian; phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic changes; previous stages of development compared to modern usage; major efforts in establishing norms in Italian (lecture); analysis of relevant texts from L'Indovinello veronese to Bembo (seminar).
