Course objectives
The course is aimed at the main problems in the development of Eastern Europe at the time of the Early Modern Age. Attention is focused on the changes in the power structures in the whole region and within individual countries, and also on the changes in the standing and influence of Eastern Europe within Europe as a whole. Particular emphasis is placed upon cultural developments and developments within the church. On completing the course students will have a grasp of the political, cultural and church history of Eastern Europe during the Early Modern Age. They will have an understanding of the circumstances behind the origin and development of despotic regimes in Russia and the gradual disintegration of the Polish-Lithuanian union based on the the principles of medieval aristocratic freedoms. They will also have a strong grasp of the developments in the political thought of the age. This will provide them with a basis to be aware of specific developments in Eastern Europe in later periods.
