Course objectives
This seminar draws loosely on CJBC527 course Czech Literature in Normalization. Students expand their knowledge of Czech literature with the field of Czech exile literature, originating in 1970s and 1980s. Situation of Czech literary exile after Prague Spring will be surveyed (shortly also the situation of its predecessors after February coup in 1948). Attention will also be paid to the production in exile publishing houses and magazines at that time. Further on, the course will deal with important Czech exile works on the basis of selected topics or groups, including their literary critical reception.
The seminar will combine home preparation with the critical reading of studied texts.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- understand better the context and scope of Czech literature of the second half of the 20th century from the literary-historical perspective;
- work critically with literary texts from the literary-theoretical perspective;
- use relevant secondary literature, including scientific journals;
- analyze basic exile works
- realize their comparison.

Teaching methods
Seminars are based on methods of presentation, interpretation of literary works and discussion about them.
Students present acquired knowledge by oral and written forms of outcomes
Assessment methods
Discussion, presentation of lectures, interpretation of texts.
Credit requirements: attendance, presentation, final essay.
Structure of presentations: length approximately 15–20 min.
a) incorporation of the work into the historical (literary-historical) context, or into the context of the whole opus of an author;
b) interpretation of the work (reflection on the work, own work with the text); focus on topics, motives, narrative mode, characters, aims of the book;
c) work with an extract from the text
