Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the key tendencies manifested in Polish literature in the period from the end of World War II to the present. Selected texts, which will be read and discussed in seminars, will serve as a starting point for outlining a specific thematic or aesthetic tendency in Polish literature. When analyzing texts we will not avoid to improve Polish language proficiency.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student will be able:
- to name and to illustrate examples of the main tendencies in Polish literature after 1945,
- to interpret selected literary works as representatives of these tendencies,
- to acquire orientation skills in Polish literary and cultural history after WWII,
- to discuss selected aspects of the contemporary Polish literature.
Syllabus
  • The content of the course differs in each semester and more details will be published before the beginning of the semester. The content is adapted to the interests of master's students and current topics and problems of contemporary Polish literature, also reflected by Polish literary criticism. We will analyze selected literary works and reviews and discuss them.
  • Polish literature and culture in the period from 1945 to 1955
  • Polish poetry in the period from 1956 to 1989
  • Polish drama and theater from the end of World War II to the present
  • Polish prose in the period from 1956 to 1989
  • Literature and culture of the 1990s
  • Selected chapters from the contemporary Polish Literature (2000–2020)

Teaching methods
Lectures, home reading, discussion in seminaries. Seminaries will be based on solid home preparation.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: regular attendance, participation in class discussions, home preparation on weekly basis inlcuding reading the assigned literature.
