Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain the development of European painting of the 17th century (Introduction into European painting of the 17th century).
Syllabus
  • 1. Major specialisations, themes and concepts of the baroque painting: frescos, altar and easel paintings, preliminary works, ephemeral decorations, concettismo, theory of decorum, illusionism.
  • 2. Trident council and his importance for the baroque painting.
  • 3. Social background of the baroque art:
  • education and social position of the painters; painter and patron of arts.
  • 4. Introduction into the oeuvre of Caravaggio, brothers Carracci, Diego Velásquéz, Nicolas Poussin, P. P. Rubens, Rembrandt, Karel Škréta, Joachim von Sandrart and others.
