Course objectives
The course represents an introduction to problem of multimedia in a broader context of art manifestos and their concrete application. Although multimedia seem to be rooted in the realm of digital media in 1980's, in a broader "archaeological" sense we can track the basic principles back to artistic and theoretical approaches of 19th century. Participation in the course presupposes active reading.
Syllabus
  • Multimedia – definitory approaches. Richard Wagner and Artwork of the Future – form versus content. Space – time – order. Italian futurism and aesthetics of media. Architecture as a form of multimedia. Dick Higgins and his concept of intermedia. Nam June Paik – art of communication. John Cage – interpretation, communication, resignation. Alea acta est: music as hypertext. Opera aperta - its aesthetics and application. Possibilities of a new narrativity in a work of mulltimedia (S. Reich, B. Korot). Audiovisual installation, sculptures and environments (I. Xenakis, B. Viola et al.).
