Course objectives
The main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
to understand the selected parts of Petronius' Satyricon;
to comment on these parts both linguistically and stylistically;
to use information gained in other courses to comment on historical and literary context of Petronius' works (on elementary level);
to analyze literary devices used in the text.
Syllabus
  • Introduction - Satyricon in literary and historical context.
  • Personality of the author.
  • Reading and translation of selected parts of Petronius' work. Cena Trimalchionis.
  • Analysis of language.
  • Grecisms.
  • Vulgar Latin elements in Petronius' work. Vulgar Latin as a means of characterization of the protagonists.
  • Ways to express irony in Satyricon.
  • Metrical analysis.

Assessment methods
Type of teaching: lectures, readings, translation and commentaries of the texts. Requirements: regular attendance and active class participation (75%), homework, essay, in-class presentation and final test (handing in a translation and commentary of given texts, knowledge of metrical schemes used in the texts).
