Course objectives
This cours deals with Dutch literature – i.e. literature written in Dutch – until 1900. An overview of social and political developments is provided and students get an introduction into a selection of literary and non-literary texts from that period, by means of capita selecta. Main objective is not only that students get acquainted with the most important authors, titles and literary movements, the students should also be able to analyse texts and situate them in their sociocultural literary context.
Learning outcomes
Students will get acquainted with basic streams and literature till 1900 and will learn to analyze selected works. They also get an overview of the historical and socio-cultural origins of the works.

Teaching methods
A combination of lectures and seminars
This course provides a comprehensive overview of Dutch literature until 1900 and in addition some "capita selecta" are discussed in more detail. Student-centered activities include presentations (three in total) and discussing texts based on reading + assignments.
