Course objectives
This course introduce students with basic principles of identification based on DNA analysis, intrpretation and evaluation of recived data in the socpe of problems of law and ethics.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course will be students able to understand basic principles of identification by DNA analysis, to interprete and evaluate recived data in the socpe of prolbematic of law and ethic.

  • Forensic genetics as a science
  • History of forensic genetics or how did it actually begin? - Alec Jeffreys and DNA fingerprinting - Colin Pitchfork - 1st case of using DNA analysis in the world's forensic science - Milan Lubas - 1st case of DNA analysis for forensic purposes in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia - What was before DNA profiling?
  • Introduction to genetics. Structure of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA, method of writing genetic information - chromosome, gene, locus, DNA marker - polymorphism, mutations; homozygotes, heterozygotes - heredity of genotypes in genotypes, hemizygos, haplotype - a new one - "free" DNA.
  • Biological traces and biological material - tissue origin, species origin, and origin of biological material - usability of biological material for forensic genetic analysis - handling of biological traces - properties and behavior of the biological material in trace - evidence potential of trace
  • Principles of forensic genetic analysis - individuality and identification - determination of kinship - management of biological traces - prediction of biogeographic origin and phenotypic characteristics of a person
  • Forensic genetic analysis technology - DNA extraction - DNA quantification and DNA characterization - DNA amplification - Electrophoresis - STR loci analysis, HVR analysis mt DNA, SNP loci analysis - Degraded DNA, Mixed samples, LCN - Stochastic phenomena - etc.
