Course objectives
The course gives a brief outline of the development of zoological systematics as a scientific discipline and with the principles of zoological systematics with focus on the phylogenetical approach. It provides an overview of the diversity of animals, including phylogenetically less related groups of heterotrophic eukaryotes, i.e. protozoans. The student is introduced to the major taxonomic groups and their representatives (selected based on their importance for the understanding of evolution, in the functioning of ecosystems function, and from the human perspective) and to their phylogenetic position.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- explain the principles and main terms used in zoological systematics (foremost in phylogenetic systematics - cladistics);
- demonstrate their basic knowledge of major invertebrate and vertebrate taxa, in particular:
- to give their scientific names;
- to explain their mutual genealogy - phylogenesis;
- to name and describe their major traits/characters;
- to describe the evolutionary trends in the major organ systems;
- to demonstrate a good idea of the species richness and distribution of a given group, basic facts about its way of life and ecology.
Syllabus
  • Principles of zoological systematics - alternative concepts, basics of phylogenetic systematics. Archezoa, Protozoa (independent regnae): brief overview of the major groups and the question of phylogenetic validity. Animalia (Metazoa) - phylogenesis and characteristics of major taxa on the Phylum level and selected taxa of subordinate levels. "Invertebrates": Porifera; Placozoa; Cnidaria; Ctenophora; Platyhelminthes; Bryozoa; Rotifera; Acanthocephala; Gastrotricha; Nemertea; Sipunculida; Annelida; Mollusca; Brachyozoa; Cephalorhyncha; Nematoda; Nematomorpha; Tardigrada; Onychophora; (Eu)Arthropoda; Echinodermata. Phylum Chordata, characteristics, origin and evolution. Subphylum Tunicata, subphylum Acrania - basic characteristics and morphology. Subphylum Vertebrata - characteristics and system. Supraclass Agnatha - characteristics, living Cyclostomata. Suprafamily Gnathostomata - characteristics; primarily aquatic Gnathostomata, Chondrichthyes, Pisces - morphology, ecology and system. Amphibians, reptiles - morphology, ecology, system, adaptations to terrestrial life. Birds - morphology and system, adaptations to flight. Mammals - morphology, ecology and system.
