Course objectives
The subject gives an overview of
clinically significant microscopic fungi and fungi occurring in the environment, such as food and feed, on the walls of flats or in the air;
etiology and pathogenesis of fungal diseases;
major mycotoxin producers and diseases caused by them;
diagnostic methods used in clinical mycology.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- name microscopic fungi of medical importance;
- apply specific methods for the isolation and cultivation of clinically significant microscopic fungi;
- evaluate the morphological features of individual taxonomic groups important for species identification;
- explain effects of mycotoxins on human health.
Syllabus
  • Current systematic arrangement of microscopic medically important fungi; methods of isolation, cultivation and determination of micromycetes; dermatophytes, clinically significant yeast, Aspergillus, Mucorales, agents of hyalhyphomycosis and feohyphomycosis; fungal infection – definitions and therapy; antifungal drugs; mycotoxins of microscopic fungi and their significance.
