Course objectives
This lecture is conceived as an introduction into molecular biology and it provides explanation of basic cell processes on molecular level. Structure of genome, principles of gene expression, internal cell organization and its behaviour in the context of multicellular organisms are the main topics of the lecture.
Syllabus
  • 1. Structure and function of DNA, chromosomal DNA and its packaging in the chromatin fiber, the global structure of chromosomes, how genomes evolve. 2. DNA replication, repair, recombination, and transpozition. 3. Transpcription, splicing, translation, the RNA world and the origin of life. 4. Control of gene expression, regulatry proteins, genetic switches, principles of dcell differentiation, post-transriptional controls, RNA interference. 5. Internal organization of a cell, intracellular compartments, transport of molecules between cell compartments, intracellular vesicular traffic. 6. Mechanisms of cell communication, principles of cell signalling. 7. Cell cycle, principles of control of cell cycle phases, cell division and growth. 8. Programmed cell death. 9. Molecular basis of cancer. 10. Methods available for analyses of nucleic acids and proteins (study of genomes, transriptomes and proteomes, DNA manipulation, PCR, sequencing, transport of DNA to cells, flow cytometry).
