Course objectives
Cytogenetics is one of the oldest branches of genetics. The course provides undergraduate students the general introduction to cytogenetics. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to understand main aspect of chromosome biology and to learn modern cytogenetic techniques and methods. At the end of this course, students should be able to use methods of classical and molecular cytogenetics.
Syllabus
  • 1.Technical equipment of cytogenetic laboratory. Light microscopy, phase microscopy, darkfield microscopy, fluorescent microscopy. 2. Basic techniques of cytogenetic preparation making. Plant cytogenetics. Pretreatment, fixation, maceration, Cytochemical and histochemical staining methods, closing of preparations. Paraffin technique, squash methods, spreading methods. 3. Human cytogenetics. Chromosome identification, karyotyp, idiogram. Chromosome banding methods. Q, G, C, R, N-banding. Chromosomal aberrations. Cytogenetic abnormalities in hematological malignancies and solid tumors. An International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (ISCN). 4. Molecular cytogenetics. Methods and applications of fluorescence in situ hybridization in biological dosimetry and detection of disease-specific chromosomal alterations. 5. Application of computer image analysis in human cytogenetics.
