Prerequisites
Knowledge of general plant physiology is required. Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and biochemistry is also recommended.

Course objectives
Explain mechanisms of uptake and use of mineral nutrients in plants.
Show functions of major mineral nutrients in plan cells at the molecula level.
Explain relationships between mineral nutrition and impact of environmental changes on plants.
Explain relationships between productivity of agricultural plants and mineral nutrition.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course students are able to:
understand basic principles of nutrient availability in soil and its relationship with environmental factors;
explain basic mechanisms of the uptake and transport of all nutrients important for plants and possible consequences for interactions with plant environment and other plant species in community;
understand functions of macro- and micronutrients in plant and consequences of their insufficient supply;
predict and identify possible disorders in plant metabolism initiated by very low or too high concentrations of nutrients in an environment;
explain, how principles of plant mineral nutrition can be used in analysis of functions natural ecosystems and agroecosystems.
Syllabus
  • Nutrient pools and availability in soil, transport processes in soil.
  • Uptake of mineral nutrients: membrane transport, uptake kinetics.
  • Nitrogen cycling in ecosystems, symbiotic fixation of N2.
  • Uptake and assimilation of nitrate and ammonium ions.
  • Use and storage of N in plants, interactions of N and C metabolism.
  • Phosphate uptake by roots, its use and storage, deficiency in plants.
  • Uptake and physiological importance of K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe in different types of plants.
  • Uptake and physiological importance of micronutrients and beneficial elements in different types of plants.
  • Determination of nutrient deficiency in soil and plants.
  • Experimental approaches to the study of mineral nutrition of plants.
  • Mineral nutrition of plants in agriculture.

Teaching methods
Lectures and class discussion of questions.
Assessment methods
The course is tought every week. Discussion after every lecture. The final exam is oral. Criteria: Exam includes two randomly assigned topics. Final evalutaion includes total sum of knowledge for each topic (75%) and links between the topic whole plant functioning in the environment (25%).
