Course objectives
The course is intended to provide a detailed information on specificities of key transformations in history of vertebrates and their interretation in terms of structural and developmental biology and theier contextual (paleoecologic and paleogeographic) backgrounds. Based on acquired knowledge the student should be capable of deductions about sources of actual diversity of particular vertebrate clades (and diversity of their adaptations) and role of respective evolutionary mechanisms prodicing them.
Syllabus
  • 1. Setting of Chordata organisation and body plan. Alternative approaches in study of developmental and evolutionary mechanisms. Basic diversification of chordates, specificities of Craniata and their sources.
  • 2. Basal radiation of Craniata and setting of the organisation background of the subphylum: origin of head, skin, minalized tissues, transformation of branchial region, placodes and establishing basic epigenetic modules.
  • 3. Origin and early radiation of Gnathostomata. Integrated structural rearrangements and their variation. Chondrichthyes: history of the clade and its specificities.
  • 4. Osteognathostomata: background setting and alternatives of its transformations. Evolutionary dynamics of Actinopterygii.
  • 5. Osteognathostomata: Sarcopterygyii and origin of Tetrapoda.
  • 6. Tetrapoda: setting of basice divergences. Specificities of Lissamphibia.
  • 7. Amniota: evolution of amniote organisation, radical rearrangements of modular dynamics of early embryogenesis and developmental platform of the phylogenetic diversifications of amniote vertebrates.
  • 8. Sauropsida: developmental specificities and history of the clade. Lepidosauria, its organisation background and history.
  • 9. Archosauria: its organisation background and history. Evolution of Aves.
  • 10. Synapsida: setting of the clade and mechanisms of establishing the mammalian organisation.
