Course objectives
Paleoecology reconstructs past climate and environments, inquiries about human adaptation and impact on general trends in human evolution. The aim is to present the complex problems in the context of the latest knowledge of the whole spectrum of scientific disciplines dealing with paleoecology.
Learning outcomes
At the end of course, the student should be able to reconstruct and interpret landscape and environment in changing conditions of the Quaternary period and apply optimal methods in order to record and evaluate such changes. The student should especially be able to understand the means of human biological and social adaptation to these conditions.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction - temporal and climatic definition of the Quaternary, chronostratigraphic division - standard and regional degrees, overview of primary and complementary factors influencing climatic fluctuations - M. Ivanov.
  • 2. Development of the natural environment in the Quaternary. Overview of the most significant cold climate cycles (glacials), Quaternary climate cycle - M. Ivanov.
  • 3. Periglacial zone - cryogenic processes and relief shapes, application in paleoclimatic reconstruction - M. Ivanov
  • 4. Pleistocene fauna of Europe, climatic indicators of biostratigraphic division of the Quaternary - M. Ivanov.
  • 5. Paleobotanics. Terminology of palynological and macroremain analyses, pollen spectrum, paleoreconstruction. Fieldwork methods, “natural archives” – peat and peatbog, water biotops, lake, pond, unconventional- mostly anthropogenic deposits, forest humus. Laboratory preparation and interpretation of the samples, pollen analyses, graphic presentations, pollen diagrams - N. Doláková.
  • 6. Pollen-analytically described sites in Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia and selected sites in Northern Eurasia. Vegetational and landscape relationships within actual Boreal zone of Eurasia and their use as analogies - N. Doláková.
  • 9. Basic stratigraphy and faunal record of the Quaternary period, with emphasis on the last glaciations, and in relationship to environmental changes - R. Musil.
  • 10. Environmental analyses as a complex of abiotic and biotic factors - R. Musil.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation in the form of lectures accompanied by discussion with students. Lectures in the autumn semester 2020 will take place mainly online, supplemented by practical exercises in the optical laboratory.
Assessment methods
The course is concluded with a written test. To pass the exam successfully the student must attain minimum of 75 % from possible test points, which prove good knowledge of the issues discussed during lectures and in the required reading. The number of students at individual exam terms will be regulated according to current crisis measures in autumn semester (AS) 2020. In case of completely critical situation, the completion of the course will be in a distance form in AS 2020.
