Course objectives
At the end of the course students are able to understand main pharmacological mechanisms of drug actions leading to therapeutic, adverse and toxic effects of drugs and eventually their combinations. Student knows basic pharmacokinetic processes and parameter used in mathematical description of them and can draw basic pharmacokinetic graphs. He can give examples of pharmacokinetic interactions. Student knows where to look for information about drugs and can work with information materials of drug preparations in internet databases. Student knows basic legislative norms relevant to prescription and use of medicinal preparations.

Syllabus
  • 1st LECTURE: Definition of pharmacology and basic terminology. Drug classification. Mechanisms of drug effects. Basics of pharmacokinetics.
  • 2nd LECTURE: Factors responsible for variation in drug response. Adverse drug effects. Drug interactions. Research and development of drugs.
  • 3rd LECTURE: Drug dosage forms and application routes. Drug information sources (SUKL, pharmacopoea, AISLP, EMA). Legislation on drug regulation.
  • 4th LECTURE: Basic pharmacokinetic processes and parameters. Therapeutic drug monitoring. Computer techniques in pharmacokinetics.

Teaching methods
The curriculum enables attendance at lectures read by teachers of pharmacology. Students are provided with the pharmacology teacher presentation of the topic according to the curriculum. Oral presentation of the teacher contains pictures and schemes to demonstrate the pharmacological principles and help the understanging of the related topic.
Assessment methods
During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. The students have to pass colloquium on topics studied during the semester: final written multiple-choice test. In the test students are asked to answers to multiple-choice questions. Only 1 correct answer is possible for each question. The test contains 20 questions evaluated with 20 points. To pass the test student needs to get at least 60% out of the maximum score.
