Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to acquaint students with historical and contemporary techniques of analogue and digital photos, including the physiology of vision, which can be applied in the treatment, examination and documentation of objects of cultural heritage in the process of their conservation and restoration.
Syllabus
  • 1. The history of photography, historical processes (daguerrotype, collodium process); photometric terminology and metrology (terminology, units, the standard observer)
  • 2. Black and white photographs: the principle, chemistry, spectral properties of emulsion, the negative-positive, slide, BW materials processing (developing, fixation, stabilization).
  • 3. BW properties of photographic materials: slope, sensitivity, resolution, transmission functions. Photos in the IR and UV spectrum.
  • 4. Colorimetry, color spaces, the principle of additive and subtractive systems, color temperature, lighting for color photography and visual assessment of color images.
  • 5. The history of color photographs, subtractive, additive and holographic (interference) procedures, advanced materials color negative and positive slide. Automatic error correction mask, masked materials.
  • 6. Advanced materials processing negative and positive slide, subjective and objective evaluation.
  • 7.Automation in color photography, archival color images.
  • 8. Basic principles of digital photography, CCD and CMOS sensors, scanning and one-shot device.
  • 9. Digital Photo Processing, technical color space (RGB, Adobe RGB, sRGB, Lab), computer processing and programs (Photoshop, Corel, etc.)
  • 10. Monitors for color photography, calibration. Archiving digital images.
  • 11. Print technology for digital color photography: sublimation, ink-jet, laser. Offset printing. CMYK system, Hexachrome, concepts gamut, color space. testing technology.
  • 12. Restoration photographic images: the original image processing chemical. restoration photographic images, digital technology and digitization and subsequent computer processing.
  • 13. Photographic documentation and archiving.
  • 14.The use of photographs in the IR and UV radiation for the restoration of historic objects.
