Course objectives
At the end of the course students should understand the application of selected statistical methods in the evaluation of data in life sciences since the content of the lecture includes - evaluation of experimental results and methods, errors in data and calculations, significance testing for quantitative and qualitative data, and the use of regression and correlation analysis. The applications are focused especially on (bio)chemistry, microbiology and biotechnology.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able:
-to understand basic statistical tests in the literature;
-to evaluate common statistical data in life sciences and biotechnology;
- to apply standard regression and correlation analysis to bioprocesses;
Syllabus
  • Application of statistical methods in evaluation of experimental data in (bio)chemistry, biotechnology and microbiology.
  • Statistical characteristics, types of distribution.
  • Confidence intervals, null and alternative hypotheses, testing the significance of data.
  • Elimination of systematic errors in parallel data. The use of Poisson distribution for the testing of microbiological data.
  • Testing qualitative data, efficiency determination of bioactive substances.
  • Linear regression, a simple linearity test.
  • Correlation analysis.
  • Linear regression in the calibration of methods and analysis error calculation.
  • Impact of result variability on calculation of the determination limit.
  • Non-linear regression and its application in bioprocess models.
  • Testing linear and non-linear models.
  • Impact of result variability on determination of parameters of selected processes in biochemistry, physiology and biotechnology.
