Course objectives
At the end of the course students should have knowledge about different types of RNAs, how they are made and discarded, what is their biological role. The course covers the most recent findings in the RNA field, most of which hav not made it to the molecular biology textbooks yet. Students will also learn the theory of some of the most important methods used to study RNA.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the RNA world 2. Gene expression: prokaryotes versus eukaryotes 3. Transcription of mRNAs 4. mRNA processing: 5' end capping, polyadenylation 5. pre-mRNA splicing 6. tRNAs: transcription, processing, translation 7. rRNAs: transcription, processing, localization, ribosome synthesis 8. noncoding RNAs: snRNAs, snoRNAs 9. noncoding RNAs: miRNAs, piRNAs, siRNAs, dsRNAs 10. RNA silencing 11. RNA surveillance and degradation in the nucleus 12. RNA surveillance and degradation in the cytoplasm 13. Methods to study gene expression: microarray analysis, RT-PCR, Northern blot, 3' extension etc. 14. Methods of analysis of RNA conformation and modification

Teaching methods
This class is taught in the form of theory lectures. In each lecture, students are asked to solve a task related to the particular theme.
