Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
This course is a follow-up of a secondary school course of physics and it aims to reduce the differences in students' initial knowledge of physics and thus put the base for further study of more advanced disciplines of physics and physico-chemical topics.
At the end of the course students will be able
1. To apply the basic usage of advanced mathematics in natural sciences.
2. To understand fundamental physical terms and laws.
3. To understand the basic procedures used in solving physical problems.
Syllabus
  • 1. Units and quantities.
  • 2. Measurement, experimental data processing, elements of theory of experimental errors.
  • 3. Mathematics in physics.
  • 4. Description of world by physical theories, equations of motion, initial conditions.
  • 5. Classical mechanics, Newton’s law, conservation laws.
  • 6. Mechanics of liquids, surface tension.
  • 7. Temperature and measurement of temperature.
  • 8. Harmonic oscillator, damped and forced oscillations, resonance, oscillation with two and more degrees of freedom
  • 9. Waves, harmonic wave, waves in one dimension and waves in 3D space, superposition, dispersion.
  • 10. Electrostatics, electric field, potential and voltage, electric dipole, polarization.
  • 11. Electric current, measurement of electrical quantities.
  • 12. Magnetic field, magnetic dipole, magnetic properties of matter, electromagnetic field.
  • 13. Optics.
  • 14. Introduction to Microphysics

Teaching methods
Theoretical lectures with large number of physical experiments, theoretical exercise.
Assessment methods
(a) Solving larger homework and (b) oral colloquium.
In the part (a) students demonstrate the ability of solving extensive and complex problems of mathematics with possible physical applications. In the part (b) they demonstrate the understanding of important concepts, as well as the good orientation in the discipline.
Language of instruction
Czech
