Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
Common methods of data processing and astronomical observations are learned. Students will have ability to process common astronomical data (acquired by both optical telescopes and spacecrafs) including their intrepretation.
Syllabus
  • Spherical astronomy (determination of angular distances, geographical coordinates, refraction).
  • Astrometry (methods used for CCD and digital cameras, determination of proper motions, positions of comets, asteroids, Moon's mountains).
  • Photometry (methods of CCD photometry, determination of magnitudes of variable objects, determination of fluxes, photometrical calibration, Solar constant).
  • Spectroscopy (building of own spectroscope, determination of stellar spectra, basic physical parameters of stellar atmospheres).
Literature
  • BRADT, Hale. Astronomy methods : a physical approach to astronomical observations. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. xxiii, 433. ISBN 0521535514. 2004. URL info
Teaching methods
Laboratory exercises. Homeworks.
Assessment methods
Processed data with results and their interpretation as homeworks are assessmented. The final assessment is taken view on quality of reports and deadlines.
