Course objectives
The course focuses on Qauaternary sediments, their stratigraphy and dating. Influence of paleoclimatic changes will be explained as well.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able: -to understand the fundamentals of chronostratigraphic subdivision of Pleistocene and Holocene and the basic dating methods of Quaternary rocks -to understand the principles of Quaternary palaeoclimatology -to explain the extraterrestrial steering factors of climate changes (Milankovitch theory) -to represent the main types of Quaternary depositional environments and explain the principles of their stratigraphic evolution with relation to the climate changes
Syllabus
  • Quaternary: definition, chronostratigraphic location and subdivision
  • Glacials and integlacials: definition, history, chronostratigraphic significance, overview in Europe and North America
  • Record of climatic changes in the environment: glacieustatic fluctuation, continental ice cover, oceans and delta O18 isotopic ratio, palynology, CO2
  • Milankovitch theory: eccentricity, Earth axis tilt and precesion - basic charactersitics, periodicities, insolation and climatic significance
  • Methods of dating of Quaternary rocks: radiocarbon method, dendrochronology, paleomagnetism, tephrostratigraphy, aminoacid dating, lichenometry, weatheting and pedogenesis, etc.
  • Quaternary depositional environments: glacial, eolic + loess, lacustrine, fluvial, karst, slope processes, etc.
