Course objectives
After the completion of the course the student should be able to:
understand authentic physical texts at B2 level of CEFR
understand spoken discourse concerning physical topics at B2 level of CEFR
communicate on a special topic at B2 level of CEFR
skim the text and understand its general meaning
scan the text and find a piece of specific information
formulate the main ideas of the text
distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information
summarize relevant information
inform about one´s studies and research
present the results of one´s research
apply the acquired skills to new physical topics
Learning outcomes
After completing this course the student will be able to:
- understand authentic texts/lectures abou physics
- identify the main ideas
- formulate the main ideas
- interpret the information
- present topics related to physics using basic presentation techniques
- summarize a text about physics
- compare and contrast
- use arguments in a discussion on a topic related to physics (defend one´s opinion, oppose, support arguments of a colleague)
- present one´s research using advanced presentation techniques
Syllabus
  • Syllabus of the course:
  • 1. Texts from physics and other related fields according to current importance and interest (vocabulary and language functions)
  • 2. General texts about physics(vocabulary and language functions)
  • 3. Presentation skills practice (Introduction, Signalling devices, Ending, Delivery, Using Visual Aids, Interpreting graphs, Handling Questions, Practical Presentations)
  • 4. Conference skills practice (preparing a Call for Papers, writing abstracts, email communication, chaing a section)
  • 5. Grammar: reported speech, indirect questions, modal verbs and infinitive structures for expressing probability, use if-clauses for hypothesizing, recommendations (should, had better), reproduce advice (verb patterns, e.g. he suggested -ing)

Teaching methods
Course of English for specific purposes:text analysis, reading comprehension,listening activities,listening comprehension, discussion (in pairs, groups, plenary),looking for relevant information on the Internet, presentations
Assessment methods
Continuous assessment through assigned tasks, written credit test - the passing grade is 60%, 80% of seminar attendance is required
