Course objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to: • understand authentic texts/lectures on Earth Science • identify the main ideas • formulate the main ideas • summarize a simple scientific/geologic text • interpret the information from the text/lecture • identify causes and effects • use terminology of the course topics; • define the terms of the course topics; • classify minerals and rocks • describe scientific methods, minerals, rocks, processes/cycles, sources of energy • compare and contrast using the proper terminology and academic vocabulary • discuss general and scientific topics • apply acquired skills in academic English to new topics

  • Scientific disciplines (infinitive and gerund) • The Earth - structure, age (making predictions, conditionals) • Minerals - classification (passive voice) • Minerals and human use (tenses) • Defining, relative clauses • Geological forces (micropresentation) • Predicting earthquakes (word formation) • Paleontology (numbers) • Revision of vocabulary and grammar
