Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, Latin roots of words, casual and scientific conversation,presentation practice.
Assessment methods
80% active attendance is required each course is concluded with a credit test. The passing grade of the credit test is 60%. Presentation of a mathematical topic (5 mins) and a written task - academic email.

use specialized chemical vocabulary, recognize synonyms;
understand clearly structured authentic mathematical texts, deduce from the text;
identify specific information in a specialized text, form questions to the text;
briefly summarize a text in writing;
practise language functions in English: how to define, describe a process, explain cause and effect
prepare a presentation on mathematical topics using basic presentation techniques;
understand authentic specialized audio materials, understand a lecture, take notes;
discuss general and mathematical topics, give arguments;
apply acquired grammar skills in specialized contexts

After the completion of the course the student will be able to:
apply strategies for preparing a team presentation

Active work in the course, doing homework and 80% seminar attendance are compulsory. Each course is concluded with a credit test. The passing grade of the credit test is 60%. All semestral assignments must be completed.

Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, Latin roots of words, casual and scientific conversation.
Assessment methods
Seminar attendance is compulsory. Each course is concluded with a credit test. The passing grade of the credit test is 60%.

Course objectives
General objectives: 1. to develop sufficient reading abilities for students to be able to work with foreign texts 2. to develop speaking abilities for everyday commucation needs 3. to develop listening abilities for everyday communication needs 4. to develop sufficient written abilities for students to express themselves in respective fields of study 5. to review basic principles of grammar in new contexts General tasks: Students will learn: 1) *cursory reading, text comprehension (skimming) *text information gathering (scanning) *grasping of main concepts within a given text *identification of main themes and various arguments withing given texts *inductive and deductive thought processes *discerning between fact and opinions *summarizing texts 2) To be able to speak about oneself, life, his or her studies 3) general aswell as specific understanding of spoken word (listing to recordings) 4) Resume writing and filling out of various application forms 5) consolidation of grammar in various contexts Evaluation: One written credit test

Cíl: Rozvinout u studentů akademické dovednosti nezbytné ke studiu cizojazyčné odborné literatury, což umožní studentům přístup k nejnovějším poznatkům v jejich oboru.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Obecné cíle: 1. rozvinout čtecí dovednosti tak, aby studenti dovedli pracovat s cizojazyčným autentickým odborným textem 2. rozvinout mluvní dovednosti tak, aby studenti dovedli komunikovat v běžných životních situacích 3. rozvinout poslechové dovednosti tak, aby studenti rozuměli slyšenému textu z oblastí každodenního života 4. rozvinout dovednost psát tak, aby studenti dovedli sestavit žánry (typy textů) potřebné pro jejich budoucí praxi 5. zopakovat a prohloubit znalost gramatiky v nových kontextech Obecné úkoly: 1) Studenti se naučí: * zběžně prohlédnout text a pochopit jeho celkový význam (skimming) * vyhledat v textu specifické informace (scanning), * formulovat hlavní myšlenku textu * rozlišit obecná tvrzení a podpůrné argumenty * rozlišit deduktivní a induktivní myšlenkové postupy * rozlišit fakta a názory * uvědomit si vztahy mezi myšlenkami v textu * rozlišit podstatné informace od nepodstatných * usuzovat, dovozovat z textu * shrnovat podstatné informace 2) jak sdělit informace o sobě, o svém studiu a univerzitě, jak definovat, klasifikovat a srovnávat 3) jak pochopit celkový význam slyšeného i specifickou informaci 4) jak napsat životopis, vyplnit formulář žádosti 5) upevní si znalost gramatiky Hodnocení: 1 písemný zápočtový test

  • Syllabus of the course: Texts from mathematics and other related fields according to current importance and interest (requisite vocab) General math texts (requisite vocab) Open courseware lecture materials and video lectures predominantly from MIT. VOA Special English audio recodings designed for ESL students

Teaching methods
Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, Latin roots of words, casual and scientific conversation.
Assessment methods
Seminar attendance is compulsory. Each course is concluded with a credit test. The passing grade of the credit test is 60%.
