Cíle předmětu
Giving scientific presentations is an important part of sharing researchers work and achieving recognition in the larger scientific communities. The ability to do so effectively can greatly contribute to career success, regardless if PhD students choose to pursue academic career, join the industry or found their own company. However, instead of engaging audiences and conveying enthusiasm, many presentations include pitfalls such as overly complicated content, monotone delivery and focusing on what speaker want to say rather than what the audience is interested in hearing. The goal of this course is to teach students how to prepare effective presentations that would appeal to a wide range of audiences — scientific audiences from the same area of interest or in related fields, as well as potential funders, the media and general public. The quality of each presentation depends on two major facets: the content and how it is presented. No matter how great the content, no one will get it if they stop paying attention. This course will give students unique opportunity to combine theory with practice in a safe and supportive environment. This course uses self-reflection as a powerful improvement tool, as well as constructive feedback from peers, and possibility to practice scientific presentation on a large stage without audience.
Výstupy z učení
Students will learn how to create clear, concise content for scientific presentations and how to deliver their message in a most efficient and dynamic way. Students will not only learn how to deliver scientific presentations more effectively but also with more self-confidence.
Osnova
  • Part I: Theoretical Part (4 hours) – students will learn the theory of science communication in an interactive lecture thought by communication expert. Part II: Practical Part (4 hours) – students will practise delivery of their scientific presentation in an empty conference venue. The goal is to overcome the fear of big lecture halls and get used to speaking into a microphone on a big stage. Everyone will have the opportunity to self-reflect and to receive constructive feedback from his/her peers. Final feedback will be given by research group leader specialised in scientific presentations. Part III: Deliverable – students will deliver their presentation in front of multidisciplinary scientific audience. The audience will consist of fellow PhD students and postdocs from various scientific disciplines, including the course lecturers.
Výukové metody
