Course objectives
Principal aim of the subject is the study of regional geographical differentiation of the studied continent. Successively, all components of natural as well as socio-economical environment are analysed. Some specific problems of the continent are illustrated on the examples from the selected countries or macro-regions. Integral part of the accompanying seminars is the development of a thematic plan of a selected issue, which the student partially implements within the seminar.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student should be able to:
- analyse the differentiating factors of the natural environment of the continent;
- characterize the social, economic, political and cultural conditions of the continent;
- identify relevant environmental and human-geographical problems of the continent.
Syllabus
  • General characteristic of continents. Ground features of geological structure. Relief, climate conditions and drainage of North and South America. Soils, vegetation and animals of American continents. The Region and its Characteristics among following pattern:
  • Historical influence of colonialism and effects of decolonization and postcolonial development for states in Americas.
  • The problem of indigenous populations and their situation nowadays.
  • Ethnic differentiation of populations and its influence on cultural difference and economic inequalities for states in Americas.
  • The issue of drug production, trade and consumption for peoples of Americas.
  • Inquiries into transportation and automobilism.
  • USA: Diffusion of American values and ideas.

Teaching methods
The basic teaching method is lecturing. Part of the course is also the creation of thematic plans by students in accordance with the principles of SEP and their practical verification.
Assessment methods
Participation on the seminars is compulsory. The necessary condition for obtaining the credit is active participation, creation and defense of the thematic plan. Written examination has two parts: physical geography and human geography.
