Course objectives

The aim of this course is to prepare students for conducting teaching optional educational activities Geography Seminar and for conducting field geographical teaching at grammar schools. The course also includes other topics and activities necessary for a high school geography teacher - assignment, conduct and evaluation of students' seminar paper, the local region and its didactic contribution to teaching, the importance and development of map skills, teaching gifted students through geographical competitions. The course is practically oriented, it is based on the active involvement of students in the creation and evaluation of relevant teaching materials and practical tasks.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to: • select suitable topics and compile a thematic plan for teaching the optional educational activity Geography Seminar at grammar school • compile a sample teaching material and plan practical activities focused on the student's activities for teaching a selected topic for the subject Geography Seminar • use different methods in teaching complex topics • choose suitable topics for independent research of students • assign, assess and evaluate seminar paper in geography at grammar school • define the local region for the purposes of geographical teaching and select the main topics • select appropriate methods for teaching the local region • choose a suitable territory, the appropriate content and form of field teaching • to create suitable practical and problem-oriented tasks and to compile a plan of field geographical teaching in a selected area for individual years of grammar school education • select various map sources and atlases suitable for geographical teaching at grammar school • choose suitable, cognitively more demanding activities for the development of map skills and geographical thinking • to create varied tasks for gifted pupils with regard to the character, organization and aim of the Geography Olympiad competition • organize and assess a school round of the Geography Olympiad
