Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the frequently used methods of data collection and analysis and to present the application of these methods on specific examples of the realized research. Attention is paid to methods of multidimensional statistical analysis, prediction methods (especially population projections), techniques of working with big data sets, but also to techniques of facilitating and managing the project cycle. The student will gain a deeper knowledge of methods and techniques used in human geography and will be able to decide on the use of appropriate methods for answering the questions.
The course is practically focused, attention is paid to the most important applications used in regional and social geography. The main aim of the course is to analyze and discuss the application of multidimensional statistical analysis methods, prediction methods (especially population projections), techniques of working with big data sets and methods of creating strategic territorial documents. At the end of the course, the graduate will acquire the skills required for managers in the regional development departments of the regional authorities or the Ministry for Regional Development of the Czech Republic.
Learning outcomes
Student completing the course will be able to use:
- methods of multidimensional statistical analysis;
- prediction methods (especially population projections);
- big data techniques;
- techniques of facilitating and managing the project cycle.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introductory lecture: methodological transformations of human geography
  • 2) Creation of strategic and development documents at the local and regional level - methodological procedures, practical examples
  • 3) The project cycle of ESI funds from the preparation of the request for data archiving support
  • 4) Prediction methods of population development 1 (cohort-component method)
  • 5) Prediction methods of population development 2 (other methods)
  • 6) Multidimensional analysis methods - analysis of main components, factor analysis
  • 7) Multidimensional analysis methods - cluster analysis, discriminant analysis
  • 8) Examples of use of multiple regression analysis
  • 9) Working with big data sets - basic principles and starting points, examples of data
  • 10) Working with big data sets - SQL, summaries, selections, data filtering, database merging
  • 11) Data acquisition in terrain using the questionnaire survey method: examples of conducted research

Assessment methods
During the semester independently work is required after the students. This is a calculation of the population development prediction and the solving of other minor tasks, where methodological procedures are applied. The assessment of the course is based on the quality of these tasks.
