Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce spatial mobility as a significant phenomenon affecting spatial organization, functioning and differentiation of contemporary society. The subject aims include: (1) familiarizing students with the role of mobility in the formation of time-space patterns of everyday life, (2) discussion of socio-technological conditions of mobility behavior, as well as (3) analysis of current public policies and planning tools responding to increased social the importance of spatial mobility.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to have a critical geographic view of the complicated topic of mobility. They will be able to differentiate between different forms of mobility, different theoretical approaches to mobility, and will be able to formulate basic tools for mobility policies.
Syllabus
  • Box 1: Everydayness and routine movement
  • 1a. The role of mobility in shaping everyday life, the theoretical basis and the context of research.
  • 1b. Geography of Home: Root on site and time, synchronization, synchronization, and translokalism.
  • 1c. Free time mobility: fun, pleasure, sports, shopping, leisure; social role of mobility.
  • 1d. Mobility of work, context, scale and time-space patterns.
  • Framework 2: Mobile technologies and their acquisition, cyborg
  • 2a. Cyborgisation of society: the relationship between technology and body, everyday technologies and applications.
  • 2b. Technological conditionality of spatial experience: shoes, clothing, white stick, wheelchair.
  • 2c. Automotive versus mass transportation, information technology, the gift of travel time.
  • 2d. Cultural conditionality of automobility, automotive and space (non)justice.
  • Box 3: Planning and public mobility policies
  • 3a. Sustainable Mobility Plans - Context, Goals, Processes; the concept of smart cities.

Teaching methods
Teaching takes place in the form of theoretical lectures and exercises, in which three compulsory texts are discussed and three practical tasks are solved independently. Basic teaching methods include frontal lectures, literature reading, text analyzes, group discussions and independent work.
Assessment methods
Prerequisite for successful completion of the course is reading of three obligatory texts, elaboration of three practical tasks and active participation in exercises. The course ends with an oral colloquium that verifies the ability to apply the concepts of daily mobility to public policies and to their own research practice.
