Course objectives
The main objective is to broaden student's GIS knowledge in practical applications in selected geographical disciplines. The subject is focused on GIS applications in physical and human geography. The main topics are as follows: data sources, spatial data formats, digital terrain modelling, network analyses, GIS analysis with vector and raster (grid) data. A student should be able to understand the basic methods of geoinformatics explained in individual lectures at the end of the course. (S)he would be able to explain when to apply individual methods and make reasoned decisions about preconditions that are necessary for proper utilization of methods in physical geography. (S)he would be able to work with information on data preparation, make deductions based on acquired knowledge concerning application of methods and properly interpret results.

Basic of GIS, connection of spatial and descriptive atributes, data querring 5. Simple calculations on vector datain GIS, overlay map algebra 6. Digital terrain modelling (DTM) 7. Spatial interpolation in ArcMap, Thiessen polygons 8. DTM derivates, terrain analysis 9. Hillshading, terrain profiles 10. 3D vizualization, data animation (ArcScene) 11. Teaching methods
Lectures explaining basic terms and principles in geoinformatics, spatial analysis and digital cartography and presenting individual examples step by step. Practical training based on 11 exercises that are solved using GIS and software for spatial analyses.
Assessment methods
Elaboration of all practical excercises is the basic condition to pass the exam. The exam is in the form of practical test combined with theoretical discussion.
