Course objectives
The subject reflects growing requirements on accessibility of global data resources containing accurate, complete, up-to-date and consistent information from various fields of human activities. Students should acquire insight into global databases containing data on hypsometry, vegetation, land use, hydrology, traffic system, settlements, administrative borders and other information utilizable for creation of map products.

  • 1. Role and concept of global databases. 2. Issues of data policies on international level. 3. Organizational matters, data, technologies, standards. 4. Access mechanisms, financial and human resources. 5. Basic examples of global databases 6. Global Mapping project (Euro Global Map) and its structure 7. GSDI. 8. Digital Earth 9. LGCN and GISD. 10. INSPIRE, GMES.

Assessment methods
The primary aim of this subject is to demonstrate the ability to orient in the field of global databases. He/she should know the main examples of global databases projects, as well as its content, availability and structure.
